Cracked heels can be a feature of quite a few skin diseases. The skin is covered with a tough outer layer called keratin which is a dead layer. That is why it can take the punishment of physical abuses without feeling pain or getting damaged. It is replaced continuously by a new layer formed from underneath. The soles and heels in particular have a tougher and thicker keratin layer because of the excessive wear and tear they have to endure. Since it is a dead layer it cannot repair itself, so once it gets very dry it will start to flake off and even get cracked.

It has to be kept well hydrated in order to remain soft and supple so that it does not get cracked when the skin of the heel flexes under the weight of the individual while walking. One way to keep it hydrated is to wear socks and shoes so that the insensible perspiration keeps the skin and keratin well hydrated. Wearing socks and shoes in summers is not a big problem as most men wear socks and shoes throughout the season. Yet many women find it uncomfortable or even impossible to wear socks in summers either because they are not fashionable or simply because of habit. If one cannot wear shoes and socks during summers then the following maneuvers can help get rid of the problem:

  1. Every effort should be made to keep using a moisturizer throughout the day. Any moisturizer containing glycerin, lactic acid or urea would be a good choice.
  2. At night time, keep the feet soaked in warm water with two teaspoons of olive oil for about 15 minutes and then gently dry them with a towel. As an alternate, soak them in plain warm water for a while and then gently rub heels with a pumice stone or an emery board to take away the flaking keratin. Finally rub in a moisturizer. The above maneuvers should be practiced and continued for as long as is required.
